Just like any new mom, I am learning quite a lot about what new babies really need. It takes energy to care for a creature who hasn't yet learned to eat on their own, walk on their own, or even go to the bathroom on their own. As a result I felt that I was changing my son's diaper constantly throughout the day. The biggest problem with changing eight to ten diapers a day isn't in wiping a cute little bum, but disposing of so much waste.
While babies are the newest and cutest creatures on our planet, it can be argued that they also create the largest amount of waste. It finally occurred to me that the bags full of diapers I was throwing out, was just added to about fifty million others that are tossed out everyday. The worst part is that these diapers will sit in a pile where beautiful acres of land once existed for the space of about five hundred years before it decomposes.
What is exciting in these times, is that people see these problems and conjure up brilliant solutions. I am not claiming myself to be one of these people, but I do know of many valuable ideas on the market today. I feel, however, that I will be of slight use to society by helping to promote these ideas to other consumers.
The first most exciting product that I've found is appropriately called a "gDiaper," which naturally stands for green diapers. While my opinion on the matter may not mean much to you, perhaps the fact that Julia Roberts, a famous mom, is a customer of this genuine new product. A small family from Australia came upon this idea for a flush-able, reusable diaper.
Your gDiaper is an outer covering that can come in many different prints and colors, with a removable, disposable, and completely biodegradable pad inside. The pad fits perfectly in the covering very easily and when the diaper becomes wet, or worse, you simply take it out, and flush it! The outer portion is also machine washable. Many alternatives have been suggested, however, nothing ranks close in comparison to this revolutionary product.
Price wise, don't be intimidated that famous celebrities seem to dote on the idea. They are really affordable. Especially if you purchase a starter package, only about $27 dollars for two diaper covers and a small pack of refills. The diapers by themselves run from $15.99 to $18.99 with the refills in packages of 128 for $52. That averages about 40 cents per refill.
In comparison with the current disposable brands, you're talking about 27 cents for each Pampers diaper, 22 cents per Huggies diaper, and a mere 15 cents per Luvs Premium diaper, approximately on average. But the truth is that the green that gDiapers for a couple extra dimes, is far more substantial than anything you can fit into your wallet. For that reason alone, the price comparison seems inconsequential.
I will briefly mention that Seventh Generation is another company devoted to creating green, environmentally safe products of all kinds. Their diapers specifically are chlorine free and biodegradable. The websites for Seventh Generation and gDiapers will be far more accurate and sufficient in convincing you of their power to help our world, more than what I can say. Think how much more valuable our land properties will be to us when they are free from the pollution of even the cutest little bums.
